Movement meditation teacher training in the lineage of Gabrielle Roth. Three-year intensive training in the 5Rhythms map (Flowing, Staccato, Chaos, Lyrical, Stillness) as a moving meditation practice. Used worldwide by therapists and movement educators.
5Rhythms is the movement meditation practice developed by Gabrielle Roth across the 1970s and 1980s in New York and California. Roth, a movement teacher and theater artist, mapped what she called the five rhythms of human energy: Flowing, Staccato, Chaos, Lyrical, and Stillness. The map became a meditation practice in which participants move through the rhythms in sequence, called a Wave, with the music and the form together producing what Roth framed as a body-based meditation accessible to people who could not sit still on a cushion. Roth taught publicly until her death in 2012 and trained generations of senior teachers who continue the lineage today. The 5Rhythms Global organization governs the credential and authorizes new teachers through structured training cohorts. Approximately three hundred Certified 5Rhythms Teachers serve in fifty-plus countries at the time of writing, running weekly classes, workshops, and longer retreats globally. The teacher training is a three-plus-year program in which substantial accumulated practice and study lead to certification. Trainees must complete a long sequence of prerequisite practice, a formal Heartbeat program covering the emotional and meditative dimensions of the work, the Cycles program covering the developmental and somatic structure of human life as the lineage maps it, and intensive teacher training cohorts with senior teachers. The curriculum is built around the assumption that 5Rhythms cannot be taught from a manual; trainees develop teaching capacity through long embodied apprenticeship. In 2014, several senior 5Rhythms teachers split off to found Open Floor International, taking with them substantial faculty and student bodies. The two lineages now coexist in the wider conscious-movement field. 5Rhythms Global continues under the leadership of Roth's son Jonathan Horan and the senior teaching body, with the Roth lineage's specific shamanic-vision framing intact. Tuition across the full pathway runs roughly USD 8,000 to 12,000, varying by region. The credential is Certified 5Rhythms Teacher and is recognized within the international 5Rhythms community and the wider conscious-movement field. Teachers earn income from weekly class and workshop fees and many run sustainable independent teaching practices.
The pathway moves through accumulated practice, study, and supervised teaching. Prerequisites include substantial participation in 5Rhythms classes and workshops over years. The Heartbeat program covers the emotional and meditative dimensions of the rhythms, with substantial personal work as participants engage the territory each rhythm opens: Flowing as fear, Staccato as anger, Chaos as overwhelm, Lyrical as joy, and Stillness as compassion in Roth's framing. The Cycles program covers the developmental and somatic structure of human life across birth, childhood, adolescence, maturity, death, and rebirth. Teacher training cohorts with senior teachers cover teaching methodology, the use of music, holding space for the emotional and somatic material that arises in classes, and the practical work of building a sustainable teaching practice. Reading includes Roth's Maps to Ecstasy, Sweat Your Prayers, and Connections, alongside selected somatic and movement-psychology sources.
Training combines extended residential intensives, ongoing personal participation in 5Rhythms classes and workshops, mentorship with senior teachers, and supervised teaching practice. Cohorts are kept small enough for direct mentor relationships. Faculty include the senior teaching body authorized by Jonathan Horan and the wider 5Rhythms Global leadership. Final certification depends on extensive accumulated practice, demonstrated teaching competence, mentor review, and the senior body's recognition of readiness. The pathway is patient and embodied; trainees typically take three to five years from initial commitment to full certification.
Graduates earn the Certified 5Rhythms Teacher credential and are authorized to run weekly classes, workshops, and retreats globally. The credential is recognized within the international 5Rhythms community and the wider conscious-movement field. Teachers earn income from class and workshop fees; many run sustainable independent teaching practices. The credential does not authorize clinical therapy.
Substantial accumulated practice in 5Rhythms classes and workshops over years, completion of the Heartbeat and Cycles programs, and the senior teaching body's recognition of readiness for the teacher training cohort. There is no required academic credential. Application includes references and essays.
5Rhythms sits alongside Open Floor International (founded by senior 5Rhythms teachers who split in 2014), Soul Motion, and Continuum as the established conscious-movement lineages. 5Rhythms is the largest and most institutionally structured globally, with three hundred-plus teachers in fifty-plus countries. Open Floor offers a parallel framing with substantial somatic-psychology integration. Soul Motion and Continuum are smaller and have more specialized frames. For practitioners drawn specifically to Roth's lineage and to the shamanic-vision framing of the rhythms as a map of human energy, 5Rhythms remains the home community.
