MBSR · Hong Kong
GMC member for China/Hong Kong. Founded by Kevin Fong. Offers MBSR teacher training across Hong Kong and mainland China through partnership with ZKBA.
MBSR Teacher Training at the ATINAT Institute of Mindfulness Training is the GMC member program serving Hong Kong and mainland China, founded by Kevin Fong. The Institute partners with ZKBA (the Zen Mind, Beginner's Mind tradition's Asian network) to deliver the MBSR teacher pathway across Hong Kong and mainland Chinese cities. The credential is GMC member-aligned, which places it among the small set of MBSR teacher training routes recognized as fidelity-aligned with the original CFM standard internationally. GMC, the Global Mindfulness Collaborative, is the international body coordinating the MBSR teacher training schools that teach to a shared standard derived from the original CFM curriculum at UMass. GMC member status means the program meets defined criteria for curriculum, faculty, supervision, and graduate competence. ATINAT's GMC status is the working credential differentiator in the Asian MBSR teacher market; most competing programs in the region don't carry GMC alignment. What the multi-year pathway delivers: foundational personal practice as MBSR participants; teacher development training covering the standard CFM curriculum from the teacher's seat; supervised practicum teaching the protocol with recorded sessions reviewed by ATINAT faculty; ongoing supervision; and documented silent retreat hours. The hybrid format combines in-person Hong Kong intensives with online sessions, making the program accessible across mainland China and the broader region. For Asian clinicians and educators planning to teach MBSR in healthcare, university, or institutional contexts, ATINAT is one of the few GMC-aligned routes available without traveling abroad. The credential carries the same fidelity weight as European GMC member schools (ADM in France, Motus Mundi in Italy, Nirakara in Spain) and Brown's MBSR certificate in the U.S.
The multi-year pathway covers the standard MBSR curriculum from the teacher's seat across staged development. Foundational stage: the eight-week MBSR course as participant. Teacher development: week-by-week curriculum work covering body scan, sitting practice, mindful movement, walking meditation, mindful eating, the all-day, and the relapse-of-attention work that closes the eight weeks. Supervised practicum: teaching the full eight-week MBSR protocol with recorded sessions reviewed by ATINAT faculty for fidelity and inquiry quality. Ongoing supervision: regular review sessions through and beyond practicum. Reading draws on Kabat-Zinn's published work and contemporary MBSR research literature. Inquiry skills training is a defined emphasis; Asian cultural and clinical contexts add specific dimensions to inquiry that the curriculum addresses directly.
Delivery is hybrid across Hong Kong and mainland China. In-person intensives anchor in Hong Kong with some sessions in mainland Chinese cities depending on cohort. Online sessions handle theory, technique discussion, and supervised review across the broader Chinese-speaking region. Cohort sizes are kept small for direct faculty response on practice teaching. The hybrid format works around the practical reality that students across mainland China and Hong Kong can't easily commit to a single residential location. Silent retreat hours are completed at approved teacher-led centers in the region and internationally.
Graduates receive ATINAT's GMC member-aligned MBSR teacher certification. They're qualified to teach the eight-week MBSR protocol in clinical, academic, corporate, and community settings across Hong Kong, mainland China, and the broader region. The credential carries international recognition through GMC membership and is recognized by employers and accrediting bodies that hire MBSR teachers. Common post-graduation paths include teaching MBSR in Asian healthcare systems, building corporate MBSR programs, contributing to MBSR research in Asian populations, and entering supervisor or trainer roles within the broader Asian MBSR community.
An established personal mindfulness practice and prior MBSR participant experience are expected. Clinical, healthcare, or educational professional backgrounds are common given the framing of the credential. Documented silent retreat hours accumulate across the pathway. English fluency is required for most stages, though some sessions may run in Cantonese or Mandarin depending on cohort and faculty. The multi-year pathway requires sustained commitment.
Among MBSR teacher training routes for Hong Kong and mainland Chinese clinicians, ATINAT's GMC member status is a primary differentiator. Compared to non-GMC mindfulness teacher training programs in the region, ATINAT carries the international fidelity recognition non-aligned programs don't. Compared to Brown's MBSR certificate or European GMC member schools (ADM, Motus Mundi, Nirakara), ATINAT offers comparable credential weight without requiring travel to North America or Europe. The price point is competitive within the Asian market.
