Dhagpo Kagyu Ling sits in Saint-Léon-sur-Vézère in southwestern France and is the European seat of the Karma Kagyu lineage of Tibetan Buddhism, established in 1976 at the request of the 16th Karmapa Rangjung Rigpe Dorje. The center has been led for decades by Lama Jigmé Rinpoché, a senior Karma Kagyu teacher and long-term student of the 16th Karmapa, alongside the resident sangha at the adjacent monastery and three-year retreat center. The Karma Kagyu tradition is one of the four main lineages of Tibetan Buddhism, alongside Nyingma, Gelug, and Sakya. Its hallmark is the Mahamudra path, an approach to the nature of mind closely related to Dzogchen but with its own textual lineage and practice forms. The lineage is headed by the Karmapa, currently the 17th. Dhagpo functions as the lineage's principal European study and retreat seat, with the resident Geshes, Lamas, and translators producing French-language teaching material that's used across the wider Karma Kagyu network in Europe. Programs at Dhagpo cover three layers. Short courses and weekend retreats serve newcomers and ongoing students with introductions to Buddhist meditation, Mahamudra view, and Karma Kagyu lineage prayers. The Institut, the longer-form study program, covers the systematic teachings of the lineage over a multi-year path including foundational philosophy, lineage prayers, and lineage practices. The most committed students enter the traditional three-year, three-month retreat at the adjacent retreat center, which is the Karma Kagyu lineage's classical formal retreat for ngondro and deity-yoga completion. Teacher authorization within the Karma Kagyu lineage is conferred by senior lamas (the lineage holders, the Karmapa, and senior teachers like Lama Jigmé Rinpoché) based on completion of formal study, three-year retreat where appropriate, and demonstrated capacity. There is no commercial certification. The center serves as the European study and retreat infrastructure for a serious Vajrayana lineage, intended for committed Buddhist practitioners rather than weekend mindfulness seekers.
Short-form programming includes introduction to Buddhist meditation and philosophy, weekend retreats with Lama Jigmé Rinpoché and visiting lamas, lineage prayer ceremonies, and seasonal teachings. The Institut's systematic study covers foundational Buddhist philosophy in Karma Kagyu framing: Lamrim-equivalent graduated path teachings, Madhyamaka view, lineage prayers and history (the Mahamudra Lineage Tree, the Aspirations of Mahamudra), and introductions to Mahamudra practice. The three-year retreat at the adjacent retreat center covers the full ngondro (one hundred thousand each of refuge, prostrations, Vajrasattva, mandala, and guru yoga), deity-yoga retreats on Karma Kagyu lineage deities, and Mahamudra practice under qualified retreat masters. Teaching authorization runs through completion of these layers and senior-teacher recommendation. There is no fixed-length teacher training program; the path is the traditional Karma Kagyu formation.
Delivery is hybrid: residential intensives at the Saint-Léon campus, weekly classes for local students, and online study options for distance learners. The temple, the resident lama community, and the adjacent three-year retreat center provide the lineage infrastructure. French is the primary teaching language; Tibetan source material is studied in French translation prepared by the center's translators over decades. Three-year retreat is fully residential at the dedicated retreat center under retreat master supervision, with the standard Karma Kagyu schedule of multiple practice sessions per day, structured liturgy, and limited contact with the outside world.
There is no commercial certificate. Completion of the three-year retreat is recognized in the lineage as a foundational practitioner credential. Teaching authorization is conferred by senior lamas based on completed formal study, retreat completion, and demonstrated capacity. Retreat completions and study completions are tracked within the lineage and gate access to higher Mahamudra teachings.
Short courses and weekend retreats are open to anyone interested. The Institut's systematic study requires foundational engagement and refuge. Three-year retreat requires substantial prior study, ngondro completion or near-completion, and acceptance by the retreat master. Mahamudra teachings are gated by appropriate empowerments and lineage commitment.
Among Tibetan Buddhist centers in Europe, Dhagpo is one of the principal seats alongside FPMT centers (Gelug), Lérab Ling (Rigpa, Nyingma), and various Sakya and Drikung Kagyu venues. Within the Karma Kagyu lineage specifically, Dhagpo is the principal European seat. Compared with secular mindfulness training, this is a serious Vajrayana commitment with traditional retreat requirements. The three-year retreat at a total cost of around EUR 15,000 plus living expenses is among the more accessible classical Vajrayana retreat paths in the West.
